Preparing for obstacles so you can stay committed—without feeling alone.
Hi Kimberly,
Results Are Not Without Challenges
I’ve shared before that I struggled with food sensitivities and went through some pretty strict elimination diets. Some of those dietary changes overlapped with family vacations—where, of course, no one else was eating the way I needed to. And I don’t know about your family, but mine always has fun food in abundance when we’re together.
It was hard—really hard—to watch everyone else enjoying things that I couldn’t have. I remember taking a walk with my mom and just crying. So much of our time with loved ones revolves around food, and I felt left out, even though I knew I couldn’t go back to old habits. I was determined to heal.
My mom, being the amazing woman she is, made sure to have something “fun” for me whenever we got together. Glen and I also started bringing dishes that fit my needs—sometimes to share, sometimes just so I had something safe to enjoy.
We also became more proactive. We would check restaurant menus ahead of time or call to ask questions. One of our favorite Thai places in Lancaster City had the sweetest server—when we picked up takeout, she reminded me, “Make sure you don’t eat your husband’s meal; it has pineapple in it.” I thanked her and couldn’t help but smile. It felt good to have someone—even a complete stranger—look out for my health.
Those moments reminded me that although challenges will come, support often appears in unexpected ways when we stay committed to the path we’re on.
Prepare for Obstacles & Pre-Decide How to Respond
As you’ve likely experienced in your own journey, circumstances will arise that challenge your routines—family traditions, travel, schedule disruptions, cultural norms, and more. The trouble usually comes when we aren’t prepared for these moments and end up reacting on the spot: Well… just this one time. But “one time” can quickly become “all the time,” and before we know it, we’re right back where we started.
Instead, take time to anticipate the obstacles you might face based on your goals, and pre-decide how you will respond. This keeps you rooted, supported, and aligned with the person you’re becoming.
Pre-deciding might look like:
- Asking to shift a meeting or gathering so you can honor your sleep schedule
- Bringing foods or snacks that fit your needs
- Calling ahead to restaurants to explore safe or modifiable options
- Waking up a bit earlier for exercise, prayer, meditation, or another grounding routine
Small proactive decisions create tremendous momentum for long-term transformation.
Tip of the Week: Identify Obstacles & Pre-Decide Your Response
Think back to the SMART goal you created last week.
- What potential obstacles can you foresee—or have already experienced?
- How can you pre-decide your response to those situations?
- If you’ve faced one already, how did it go? What might you change if it happens again?
Feel free to share your ideas or challenges with me. I would love to help you think through strategies that support your specific goals and lifestyle.
