Healing isn’t instant—but it is possible.
May the Force be with You Kim,
In my own healing journey—and in working with patients over the past two decades—I’ve seen how closely patience and perception are connected.
We all want to feel better now.
But how we see ourselves, our situation, and even the people around us… can either support our progress or quietly hold us back.
My mom used to say, “Patience is a virtue…” (Not always what I wanted to hear in the moment.)
In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker is called out more than once for his impatience:
“I cannot teach him. The boy has no patience…”
But Obi-Wan Kenobi offers a different perspective:
“He will learn patience.”
Because patience can be learned.
And when we lack it, we often look for shortcuts… which rarely lead where we truly want to go.
At the same time, when our perception is off—when we don’t see clearly—we can become discouraged or even give up before we’ve really begun.
This week, we look at how patience and perception work together… and how they can help us move forward with clarity and confidence.
A Virtue, Patience Is:
When it comes to health—pain, inflammation, chronic conditions—we often want to get back to “normal” as quickly as possible.
That urgency is understandable.
But healing doesn’t usually happen overnight.
Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time helping people understand two key things:
- Healing has a timeline
- Comparison can slow you down
We are each uniquely created. Even when symptoms look similar, the path to healing can be different.
If we get stuck in what we think should be happening, we can miss what is happening—and limit our progress.
This is something Luke wrestles with often—his perception shapes his decisions.
As Obi-Wan Kenobi wisely says:
“Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.”
That’s powerful.
Because it means our perspective isn’t always the full picture.
When perception is limited, impatience tends to follow—and with it, impulsive decisions or shortcuts that don’t serve us well.
But when we begin to see more clearly, patience becomes easier.
And when we practice patience, we give healing the space it needs to unfold.
Perception:
One of the most memorable moments in The Empire Strikes Back is when Luke tries—and fails—to lift his ship from the swamp.
“I can’t. It’s too big.”
And Yoda responds:
“Size matters not…”
Luke believes it’s impossible.
Yoda lifts the ship with ease.
Luke, stunned, says: “I don’t believe it.”
And Yoda replies:
“That is why you fail.”
So often, this is where we get stuck.
Not because change is impossible… but because we don’t fully believe it’s possible for us.
Healing may not look like lifting a ship from a swamp—but it does require:
- Trust in the process
- Willingness to keep going
- Small, consistent steps over time
Patience isn’t passive—it’s active trust.
And perception isn’t just what we see—it’s what we choose to believe.
Sometimes, that belief starts with borrowing hope from someone else—a mentor, a coach, a friend—until it becomes your own.
Because healing is rarely instant.
But it is possible.
